Tommy V

Fran's rope-climbing big brother, with lungs and grip to match.

The workout (For Time)

  • For time:
  • 21 Thrusters — 52 kg (115 lb) / 38 kg (85 lb)
  • 12 Rope climbs, 15 ft
  • 15 Thrusters — 52 kg (115 lb) / 38 kg (85 lb)
  • 9 Rope climbs, 15 ft
  • 9 Thrusters — 52 kg (115 lb) / 38 kg (85 lb)
  • 6 Rope climbs, 15 ft

Estimated time: 12–25 min. This is a thruster-and-rope-climb couplet that torches your grip, shoulders, and lungs in equal measure. The descending thruster sets tempt you to go unbroken, but every rope climb demands fresh forearms, so manage your grip like a budget. Keep the thrusters efficient with a tight front rack, and climb with your legs clamped hard so your arms only guide rather than haul.

Standards

  • Thruster: below-parallel squat to full overhead lockout, 52/38 kg (115/85 lb)
  • Rope climb: legal to a 15 ft mark, touch at the top, controlled descent
  • Total volume: 45 thrusters and 27 rope climbs

Scaling

  • Reduce thruster load to 43/29 kg (95/65 lb)
  • Halve the rope climbs, or substitute 3–4 rope-to-stand pulls per ascent
  • Sub strict pull-ups or ring rows if rope climbs aren't available

Coaching tips

  • Protect your grip: break the thrusters before your forearms are cooked for the rope.
  • Clamp the rope hard with your feet so your legs do the lifting.
  • Keep the thruster front rack loose and elbows high to save your shoulders.
