Wall balls for Hyrox training

The last station is 100 wall balls. Owning the right ball means you can practise the one station most racers lose minutes on.

Reviewed 5 Nov 2026 · 1 source · 4 picks

Wall balls are the eighth and last Hyrox station: 100 reps. In the Open division, men throw 6 kg to a 3 m target and women 4 kg to 2.7 m; in Pro, it is 9 kg to 3 m for men and 6 kg to 2.7 m for women 1.

A wall ball is a soft, stitched medicine ball that is big enough to catch at chest height. A hard rubber medicine ball of the same weight bounces off your hands and is not the same exercise.

Criteria

What to look for

01

Buy your race weight

Train with the weight you will race with, so the throw and the catch match race day 1. A lighter ball is useful for technique and high-rep drills.

02

Soft shell, solid stitching

A wall ball takes hard hits against a wall all day. Look for a durable outer shell and double stitching.

03

Diameter that matches

Race balls are fairly large. A much smaller ball changes where you catch it and how you squat under it.

04

A target at home

Without a mark at 3 m or 2.7 m, home reps drift low. Tape a line or fix a target at the right height.

Pacing the 100: Break the 100 reps before you have to. Sets of 10–15 with short, planned rests are almost always faster than going until failure and then resting long.
