Why we programme this

Threshold work raises the pace you can hold before lactate buries you, and just as importantly it trains the composure to stay there. The time cap is deliberate: it forces a commitment to pace and turns the piece into a rehearsal for race-day discomfort. This is the closest a training day gets to competition: a continuous effort against the clock with a compressor built in.
